City of Surrey is considering a new homeless shelter in Guildford, sandwiched between the community RCMP office and Great Canadian Superstore on 104th Avenue.
The two-storey 7,137-square-foot building is across the street from Hjorth Road Elementary school. The school is across 104th Avenue, half a block away.
City council is set to vote on the proposal Monday.
City staff are recommending that council approve utilizing the city-owned building at 14716 104th Ave. for a 2016-17 winter shelter, which would operate on a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week basis for a six-month period.
If approvals are granted, BC Housing would cover the operational costs of the proposed shelter but the city would pay to convert the building. Many renovations would be required including removing carpets; installing walls; modifying plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems; adding washrooms and showers; installing a washer and dryer; creating food facilities and more.
