Police look for suspect after assault outside Surrey bar
Surrey police say a 28-year-old man is in hospital after a fight broke out outside a Cloverdale bar early Sunday morning.
Surrey RCMP Corporal Scotty Schumann said a call about an assault in the parking lot in the 18700-block of Fraser Highway came into police shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday.
Schumann told the Now police don’t have details about the suspect but believe one man was behind the assault.
“Still waiting to interview the victim hopefully later today,” he said Monday morning.
The victim remains in hospital Monday morning for observation, according to police, and is in “fair condition.”
Schumann said he couldn’t reveal the man’s injuries as they are subject to privacy laws.
The reason for the fight is also unclear.
“Investigators are still collecting details about the motivation for the assault so it would be just speculation on our part if I provided you with the cause at this point,” Schumann said.
A man who was at Dublin Crossing pub Saturday night told the Now the victim was his friend and was at the bar to watch the band perform.
The source, who asked that the Now not publish his name, said the victim was assaulted outside the bar and hit his head on the curb as he was falling.
The man said his friend was “basically red, totally unconscious and bleeding, I think from his ear.”
Police tape was up in the parking lot Sunday morning. Asked the reason for the police tape, Schumann explained “the investigator called for a forensic member to come to scene and do photographs for him. So the scene has to be secured so nothing is moved prior to the pictures being taken.
He added, “Tape shouldn’t get your attention. We use it all the time. Tape up for more than a day should, (that’s) usually something bigger.”
Anyone with information about the fight is asked to call Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.
Meanwhile, in Vancouver, police are investigating the city’s fifth homicide this year after a 28-year-old woman died from injuries sustained early Thursday during an assault outside a nightclub.
Shortly before 2 a.m., there was a minor altercation between the victim and two women aged 25 and 29 inside the Caprice Nightclub in the Granville entertainment district. It then escalated into an assault outside the club, during which the victim fell onto the ground and was reportedly punched and kicked.
The two suspects fled from the area on foot and police traced them to a taxi half an hour later. The women were arrested as they exited the cab near Abbott and Hastings streets.
The victim was taken to hospital in “very critical” condition, suffering from head trauma, Montague said. She died of her injuries late Thursday evening.
The two suspects have been interviewed and released from custody pending further investigation and results of an autopsy, which will play a crucial role in determining if the victim had a pre-existing medical condition and influencing what charges are recommended to the Crown.
Montague said “it appears to be something very trivial or very minor” that led to the altercation inside the club before her assault.
Police are asking anyone with information about or who witnessed the assault to call the homicide unit at 604-717-2500 or leave information anonymously with CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
