A man and woman are in police custody after a high speed car chase ended in Port Coquitlam. The pair were first spotted by an officer who was driving an unmarked police cruiser on the Port Mann bridge around 1:30 a.m., according to Coquitlam RCMP. The police officer started following the car, which was driving erratically, when the driver suddenly pulled U-turn on the bridge and took off into oncoming traffic. “That’s when our officers engaged their emergency equipment then pursued the vehicle on the highway,” said Sgt. Darren Pankratz, with Coquitlam RCMP. “There were a couple cars that got out of the way, but otherwise traffic was pretty minimal at that stage.” Spike trap deployed Officers pursued the vehicle on the highway through to the area near the Mary Hill Bypass and Fremont Drive, where police deployed a spike belt to disable the car. The female driver and male passenger were then taken into custody shortly after their vehicle crashed into a gate. The male passenger was taken to hospital as a safety precaution for an unrelated medical condition, and charges are now pending against the female driver. Police say the investigation is still ongoing into the reason for her erratic driving behaviour.
